Charley German Honored with Coburn Community Service Award from Legal Aid of Western Missouri

(Kansas City, October 29, 2009)-Rouse Hendricks German May PC co-founder and shareholder Charley German has been selected as the recipient of the 2009 Honorable H. Michael Coburn Community Service Award from Legal Aid of Western Missouri.

The award goes to a member of the Jackson County legal community who has demonstrated, in the spirit of Legal Aid, outstanding service to advancing the administration of justice and for outstanding service to the community via volunteer activity and leadership.

German's selection is due in part to his work with the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association Homelessness Project. German helped create the Transactional Law Project to match transactional lawyers with non-profit organizations that serve the homeless. And he helped develop the Warrant Relief Project which helps the homeless obtain free legal representation to help them deal with outstanding municipal court warrants. The programs have helped dozens (hundreds) of homeless families overcome many of the barriers to securing employment and affordable housing.

"Charley German's commitment to the legal profession and to his community is an inspiration," said the Honorable Fernando Gaitan, Chair of the Coburn Community Service Award Committee. "There are those in this world who think about what they could do and ought to do, and there are those like Charley German who see a problem and actually do something about it. And what he's done has been remarkable."

The Coburn Award was created in 1995 as part of Legal Aid's 30th anniversary celebration. It is named after the late Judge H. Michael Coburn. In addition to working for reform in the criminal justice system as it relates to domestic violence, Judge Coburn was committed to a wide range of community and civic causes. Legal Aid created an award in his memory to pay tribute to a member of the bar whose public service activities merit recognition.

"It's truly an honor to be recognized in this way by my peers in the legal community," German said. "But this is not the result of my work alone. I share this honor with my colleagues whose tireless work in these programs is a testament to their commitment to our community. And with the families we hope we've helped along the way."
